Second Annual Summer Music Camp

Bridges to Cultural Understanding

Join us for our February 25th concert when the Bay Area Chorus will perform spirituals, an Alice Parker folk hymn arrangement and "Circus Band" by American composer Charles Ives. An authentic international flavor will be provided by our guest performers, The United Nations Association International Choir and The Clear Lake Chinese Chorus. The Pearl Hall Elementary School Building Cultural Bridges multi-media presentation contains footage of astronauts playing instruments aboard the International Space Station, recordings of the Pearl Hall students singing in ten different languages and film footage with voice-overs provided by Chris Hadfield and other NASA personnel. BCB segments will feature a solo performance by Houston Symphony violinist Sergei Galperin and speakers Michael Lopez-Alegria, Commander of International Space Station Expedition 14 and Carol Wilson, the HSO Education Manager.

Hot and cold hors d'oevres for the post-concert reception for the performers and audience are being provided by Magdy & Sofia Kotb, proprietors, the Mediterraneo Market and Cafe, 18033 Upper Bay Road.

Lift Every Voice and Sing – An American Masterworks Choral Festival

Join us January 27 th as the Bay Area Chorus participates in the Gala Closing Concert of “Lift Every Voice and Sing – An American Masterpieces Choral Festival," presented by the Houston Chamber Choir and the National Endowment for the Arts. Announcing Bay Area Youth Singers Auditions

Auditions: Tuesdays, November 6 and 13, 6-8 p.m., by appointment, at University Baptist Church. Email BAYS@bayareachorus.org or call 713-684-6030 to make an audition appointment. Auditioning singers will be asked to sing “Happy Birthday to You” without piano accompaniment, to vocalize, to match pitches, to echo rhythm patterns, and to read text from a song.

27th Annual Bay Area Chorus Scholarship Competition

The Bay Area Chorus is pleased to announce its twenty-seventh Annual Scholarship Competition. The competition is open to all high school seniors in the Houston/Galveston Bay Area who are scholastically ranked in the top half of their class and who will be pursuing a major in vocal performance or music education. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship and will perform at the Bay Area Chorus Concert, Monday, February 26, 2007.

The Bay Area Chorus presents “C is for Carols to Play and Sing”

Sunday, December 3 at 4 p.m. (First Presbyterian in Pasadena), Monday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. (Friendswood United Methodist), and Monday, December 11 at 7:30 p.m. ( Clear Lake Presbyterian).

Investigate the work of America’s finest composers and arrangers through performances of seasonal favorites as well as original compositions which capture the spirit of the holidays. The audience also has a role so don’t be surprised if you are asked to participate in a carol sing-along! The 2006-2007 Bay Area Chorus and Chamber Singers, now celebrating its 42 nd season, will perform under the direction of Keith Dixon.

Performances will also feature First Presbyterian Sanctuary Choir and Handbell Choir (Marilyn Wilkins, Director), Friendswood High School Campus Singers (Janwin Overstreet-Goode, Director) and Clear Lake Presbyterian Festival Choir and Celebration Ringers (Reginald Brown, Director).

An Alice Parker “SING” involves the entire audience in creating a musical event which is spontaneous, unpredictable and just plain fun! This legendary composer and conductor has delighted audiences worldwide with her unique approach to group singing, using traditional hymns and folk songs from many cultures.
